UDMR will decide on Tuesday whether to continue negotiations for the formation of the government led by Siegfried Mureșan. Kelemen Hunor warns that the remaining parties from the old coalition do not have the necessary majority, and presenting in Parliament with only 160–170 votes could deepen the political crisis.
If negotiations show that Siegfried Mureșan cannot obtain the required 233 votes for investiture, UDMR could suggest that the designated prime minister resign before the Parliament vote.
The statements were made on Monday in Parliament after PSD announced that it will not vote for the Mureșan Government. "The important thing is that, at this moment, what remains of the old coalition, after the decision of our colleagues from PSD, does not have a majority. It is far from having 233 votes for investiture," said Kelemen Hunor.
The UDMR leader stated that he had discussions in recent days with Siegfried Mureșan, Ilie Bolojan, and Dominic Fritz. Negotiations with PNL and USR will continue, and the UDMR leadership is expected to meet on Tuesday afternoon to make an official decision.
UDMR awaits the government program
Before deciding whether to support the future Executive, UDMR wants to see the government program and the designated prime minister's responses to questions regarding taxation, the budget, investments, economic development, and support for vulnerable individuals.
Kelemen Hunor indicated that the final decision will depend on both the program and the outcome of negotiations to form a majority.
"If we reach the conclusion that there are not 233 votes in any way, and we will probably find this out much later, after the government program is available, then we must make a decision, first of all, whether we continue discussions and end up in a chaotic situation in Parliament with 160 - 170 votes, or if we say that it's better in such a situation not to prolong the conflict, not to deepen the gap, and suggest, as much as we can do, that Mr. Mureșan resign," stated the UDMR leader.
If Siegfried Mureșan decides to go to the Parliament vote nevertheless, UDMR will have to decide whether to support him. "I would prefer not to deepen the crisis, not to prolong the time, not to deepen the gap, but it doesn't depend on me," added Kelemen Hunor.
"I don't like coming to Parliament just to lose"
The UDMR president says that the negotiations have not progressed enough, and his party does not want to participate in a vote without real chances of success. "I don't like coming to Parliament just to lose, just to have fewer votes than required for the government's investiture. This is where we are at the moment with the discussions," stated Kelemen Hunor.
Discussions will continue on Monday evening and Tuesday, with the main topics being the future government's program and the conditions under which it could be presented to the committees and then to the plenary of Parliament.
Simion: We will not vote for the Siegfried Government despite all pressures
After the National Political Bureau of PSD decided on Monday to recommend to the National Political Council not to support the investiture of the Government led by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan, the president of AUR, George Simion, announced that his party will not vote for the Siegfried Mureșan Government, "despite all pressures."
"We will not vote for the Siegfried Government despite all pressures, you won't bring us down! We left the plenary hall (Editor's note - of the Chamber of Deputies) and we will continue to stand by Călin Georgescu in all the attacks he faces! Forward, Romanian people," he wrote on Facebook.
