Number 2 in the Italian government, on the rejection of Georgescu's candidacy: A Soviet-style Euro-coup

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s deputy prime minister and leader of the right-wing populist party La Lega, has called the rejection of Georgescu’s candidacy a „Soviet-style euro-coup.”

The Italian deputy prime minister argues that by blocking Călin Georgescu’s candidacy, Romanians have been deprived of their right to vote.

"🇷🇴 Călin Georgescu's candidacy rejected in Romania. A Soviet-style euro-coup.

First, they cancel - with open ballot boxes - the elections he won, then they arrest him, then they even exclude him from the elections for fear that he might win.

Instead of "rearming Europe," we need to rebuild it to defend democracy.

La Lega stands with so many Romanian citizens who, at home or in Italy, are deprived of their right to vote through a very serious theft of democracy," wrote Matteo Salvini on X.

The Central Electoral Bureau rejected Călin Georgescu's candidacy for the presidential elections in May.

Călin Georgescu has 24 hours to challenge BEC's decision.
