President Nicușor Dan argues that the Romanian state must assert its strength against those who resort to violence against women and take firm action against drug consumption, especially among young people.
In his speech on the occasion of the 163rd anniversary of the establishment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the head of state emphasized the importance of restoring citizens’ trust in state institutions.
"We must improve our interaction with citizens and gain their trust through our daily actions," the president said.
Call to Action in Cases of Domestic Violence
Nicușor Dan drew attention to the increasing number of women killed by partners or ex-partners and made a clear appeal to authorities:
"A very, very important topic, the condition of women in our society, domestic violence, and, more seriously, all the cases of killings that have stemmed from this, which we have seen recently.
We must reach the point where, when I say 'we,' I mean the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecution, the courts, we must convey to society that the Romanian state is a strong state and convey to those former partners who just think they could threaten their ex-partner that the Romanian state will swiftly come against them if they dare to do so."
Fight Against Drugs, Another Priority
The president also spoke about drug consumption among young people, which he termed a "serious, global problem."
In this regard, he called on authorities – from the Ministry of Internal Affairs to the courts – to send a signal of strength and consistency: "Of course, it is a global phenomenon, of course, no one, ever, in the contemporary period has completely eradicated this phenomenon, but the Romanian state must send a message of strength against this phenomenon."
Respect for the Difficult Work in MAI Structures
In conclusion, Nicușor Dan expressed his appreciation to MAI employees for their work, which he described as "difficult and often dangerous," with an impact even on family life.
"Thank you and I respect you for what you do," the president conveyed.
