Nicușor Dan: Quick Talks After Motion, No Concerns Over Suspension (Video)

President Nicușor Dan stated on Wednesday in Dubrovnik that if the Government is dismissed through a vote of no confidence, he will quickly convene consultations with parliamentary parties to ensure political stability.

The head of state emphasized that there is a general political will to maintain Romania’s pro-Western direction and that he is not afraid of a possible suspension from office.

The President was also asked about the situation where a PSD-AUR alliance would form following the vote of no confidence. Nicușor Dan indicated that this scenario is unlikely.

The statements come as the motion of no confidence against the Executive led by Ilie Bolojan is in parliamentary procedure, with the decisive vote scheduled for May 5.

Key statements by the President:

  • "Romania maintains its pro-Western direction, and there is a political will, at the party level, for that."
  • "If we are there, obviously the need is to act quickly, to stabilize, and I will have a constructive position."
  • "There will be many people at the table, I cannot anticipate the outcome of the discussions, but I am fully open to it."
  • "All of us started ten months ago believing that the current coalition would be strong, and it did not happen, each of us has a responsibility."
  • "Even the Constitution of Romania speaks of Romania's pro-Western direction. When I made the statement, which I obviously maintain, I acted in this direction. I want and will act for Romania to be governed by pro-Western forces. As for suspension, I don't think suspension is a serious matter... Suspension is a very serious mechanism in which the Parliament and then the citizens penalize the president who violates the Constitution, we are not there at all."
  • "First of all, the theoretical scenario you are talking about (PSD-AUR alliance - editor's note) is extremely unlikely. There is no statement from the PSD heading towards this scenario, on the contrary, and then we can have a constitutional debate if you wish, but the constitutional arguments are in my favor."
