Nicușor Dan has promulgated the first package of fiscal measures. What does he say about the next one

President Nicușor Dan announced that he has promulgated the first package of fiscal measures adopted by the Government through assuming responsibility in Parliament at the beginning of the month, so that these can come into effect.

„I have just signed the first package and as you know, technically it is substantial, it’s 30-40 pages and every time you have to put together a package like this, technical issues arise,” Nicușor Dan stated at a press conference held in Salzburg.

Additionally, the president announces that at the beginning of August, we will have a Government assumption in Parliament on the second package of fiscal measures.

About the tensions in the coalition, he says it is remarkable that the pro-Western parties have assumed this and that the easiest thing for each of them would have been to stay in opposition.

"At the beginning of August, we will have a Government assumption in Parliament. Of course, when you take measures, after years in which Romania has spent more than it could afford, when you take measures that reduce these expenses, the contact between politicians and the population becomes difficult, and tensions arise in the coalition because of this. What I want to say at this moment is that it is remarkable that the pro-Western parties in Romania have assumed this. The easiest thing for each of them would have been to stay in opposition.

We need to send a message of calm to our partners, especially to the financial markets, and the best thing is that we had an evaluation from Standard & Poor's, which confirmed the level at which we stand. We will see the figures at the end of the year. In any case, the markets have appreciated the Romanian state's willingness to reduce the deficit and the direction it is taking," the president also stated.

When asked if the measures taken by the Government are sufficient, Nicușor Dan replied: "To always have the answer to that question, we need to look at an external observer. And the most qualified external observer is a rating agency," the president added.

The head of state also referred to the chances of meeting the target of a 7.5% budget deficit.

"As I said, package 2 was supposed to be ready at the end of July and it will be at the beginning of August. There are no dramatic issues. So let's keep calm and optimistic that we are heading in the right fiscal direction," he mentioned.
