Diana Șoșoacă Moves to Suspend Nicușor Dan. Can She Pull It Off?

Diana Șoșoacă’s party initiates the procedure to suspend Nicușor Dan from the position of president.

„S.O.S. Romania party announces that it initiates the political and constitutional procedure to remove Nicușor Dan from the position of president of Romania.

S.O.S. Romania considers that Romania can no longer be held captive by a regime that ignores the will of the people, deepens the political and economic crisis, and defies national interest.

The initiative of S.O.S. Romania is firm, assumed, and necessary. We will not allow this initiative to be politically confiscated by other parties that mimic opposition only for public image.

After the fall of the Government, Cotroceni is next. S.O.S. Romania goes all the way," writes Diana Șoșoacă on Facebook Thursday morning.

How the suspension is done

For the suspension of the president in Parliament, the vote of the majority of deputies and senators is needed, meaning half plus one of the total number of parliamentarians - that is, 233 votes out of the total of 464 parliamentarians. Subsequently, the decision of Parliament must be approved by referendum.

At this moment, SOS has only 15 parliamentarians! Even if all "sovereignist" forces in Parliament were to unite, they still would not have the necessary number of votes unless PSD joins them.

However, the SOS initiative comes after the Bolojan Government fell in a record vote of 281, precisely due to the betrayal of PSD.

The significance of this clear score was explained yesterday by MEP Nicu Ștefănuță, also on Facebook.

"What is the consequence of 281?

It will be very tempting for Parliament to try, with a high chance of success, a suspension.

And for sovereignists, it would be an intelligent strategy to win the presidential position and then immediately the governmental one. I don't think they will wait 4 years for that.

With all due respect, Nicușor Dan is not Traian Băsescu and will not withstand a suspension.

Romanians like strong leaders or at least fighters. Those who were soft and conciliatory, like Emil Constantinescu, were trampled on."

Nicușor Dan says he is not afraid

At the end of April, Nicușor Dan said he is not afraid of a potential suspension from office.

"Regarding suspension, I don't think suspension is a serious matter... Suspension is a very serious mechanism in which Parliament and then citizens penalize the president who violates the Constitution, we are not at all there".

However, in the meantime, AUR accused him of violating the Constitution because he does not invite all parties in Parliament to the informal consultations he has already started.

Moreover, last week, President Nicușor Dan stated, when asked if he would accept a PSD-AUR government, that he will never appoint a prime minister supported by AUR.
