What Did Nicușor Dan Gain From His Flattery

There are moments in international relations when silence speaks louder than a thousand statements. For Romania, the crash of a Russian drone into a residential building in Galați is one of those moments.

We are talking about the most serious incident to occur on the territory of a NATO member state, in a densely populated area, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It wasn’t a drone falling in a field, there were no fragments found in a forest, it’s not an incident at the border. A drone hit a residential building. People are injured. There was a real risk of tragedy.

And yet, over 24 hours after the incident, the Trump administration’s reaction is almost non-existent.

Donald Trump said nothing. Neither did the White House. Nor the Pentagon.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was directly asked about the incident by a Newsweek journalist. He refused to answer. He didn't even offer a standard diplomatic response. He didn't condemn Russia. He didn't express solidarity. He simply chose silence.

In diplomacy, such gestures are not accidental.

Two pale official American reactions have emerged. One from the US Embassy in Bucharest: "The United States stands with Romania following the irresponsible incursion of a Russian drone. We closely monitor this incursion, and our thoughts are with the injured and affected individuals in Galați."

The second, from the US representation at NATO: "We stand with our NATO ally, Romania, and condemn this reckless incursion on its territory. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals in Galați. We will defend every inch of NATO territory."

These are correct formulations. They are textbook formulations. However, they are also remarkably modest formulations given the seriousness of the incident.

No special consultations announced. No statement from the president. No strong reaction from the Pentagon. No request for an explanation addressed to Russia. Nothing that conveys Washington's treatment of the situation as an exceptional moment.

And here comes the uncomfortable question. What has our diplomacy of kissing the ring achieved? More specifically - What has Romania obtained in exchange for the efforts made in recent months to position itself as close as possible to the Trump administration?

Since Nicușor Dan took office at Cotroceni, the president has made a series of gestures that have sparked dissatisfaction in the country and among European partners.

From participation in the Peace Council to the urgency of providing military infrastructure for American operations against Iran, Romania seemed more concerned with gaining MAGA's favor than maintaining a synchronized position with its main European allies.

Nicușor Dan's strategy is simple: getting closer to Trump to ensure American protection at a time when the Russian threat is becoming increasingly aggressive.

However, reality seems to convey a different message.

When a residential building in Romania is hit by a drone from the war waged by Russia against Ukraine, the White House doesn't react. The Secretary of State refuses to answer questions. The Pentagon remains silent.

For an administration that constantly talks about deterrence through strength and respect for allies, the image is devastating.

Especially since we are not talking about a distant state or a secondary partner. We are talking about a NATO member at the border of the war.

Perhaps Washington considers the incident an accident (as Nicușor Dan hurried to affirm). Perhaps the American administration does not want escalation. Perhaps there is information that is not yet public.

But even in this scenario, the absence of a strong political reaction sends a clear signal to Moscow that such incidents do not generate major political costs. In fact, they generate nothing. And as ISW writes today: Putin now seems to accept the risk of causing civilian casualties in NATO countries as an acceptable consequence.

And for European allies, it is clear that Trump's Washington has other priorities.

And for Romania... perhaps the mathematician from Cotroceni can understand... humble proximity to Trump does not automatically guarantee attention and influence.

Diplomacy operates based on interests, not reciprocity. And what we see after the incident in Galați is perhaps the harshest lesson for those who believed that mere proximity to MAGA circles would automatically bring support and visibility in Washington.

So far, Romania's response seems to be cold and impersonal.

And for an ally that has just experienced the most serious security incident on its territory since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, this seems more like ignorance than a privileged strategic partnership.
