Several people were injured on Friday evening after a locomotive without brakes collided with its own wagons.
According to the Traffic Information Center of the Romanian Police General Inspectorate, the accident occurred between the Basarab Railway Station and the North Railway Station in Bucharest.
The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. A private passenger train was departing from the North Railway Station, from track 11, and during the maneuvers to reposition the locomotive (turning around for a change of direction) and then coupling to the train, the first wagon was hit, where passengers were already on board, as informed by the National Railway Company CFR SA.
"It seems that the locomotive lost its brakes and collided with the wagons, and some of the passengers who were standing in the train fell through the wagon. However, there are no serious injuries or fatalities," said the press advisor of Minister Sorin Grindeanu, quoted by Club Feroviar.
As a result of the impact, 15 people suffered minor injuries. Eight injured individuals were taken to the hospital.
Among those who required medical care was the locomotive's engineer.
A Red Plan intervention was activated, and several medical teams arrived at Basarab Station to provide care to the injured individuals.
Other passenger trains arriving at or departing from the North Railway Station were not affected by the incident involving the private passenger train, owned by the operator Regio Călători.
The incident, involving the locomotive of the private operator Regio Călători, will be investigated by the Romanian Railway Investigation Agency (AGIFER).
