New rules at Bucharest airports. Liquids of up to 2 liters allowed in hand luggage

Passengers departing from the airports in Bucharest can now carry liquids, aerosols, and gels in their carry-on luggage, in containers of up to 2 liters, a major change from the previous limit of 100 milliliters.

The new rules came into effect on Wednesday, March 11, at 00:00, and apply to passengers starting their journey from Henri Coandă International Airport (Otopeni) and Bucharest Băneasa – Aurel Vlaicu International Airport, as announced by the National Company Bucharest Airports (CNAB).

New technology at security control

The change is possible due to the new control systems installed at airports, which allow for a more detailed inspection of cabin baggage contents, without the need for strict restrictions on liquids.

The General Manager of the National Company Bucharest Airports, Bogdan Mîndrescu, explained that the measure is the result of investments in modern security equipment.

"The measure is possible as a result of the investments made by the National Company Bucharest Airports in modern, state-of-the-art security control technologies for cabin baggage, aligning the CNAB-managed airports with the best international practices in the field. Through this investment, the company reinforces its objective of constantly improving the passenger experience, while ensuring the highest security standards," he stated.

Same measure already applied at two other airports

The relaxation of restrictions applies to passengers starting their journey from airports in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Sibiu. However, passengers in transit or transfer do not benefit from the new rules and remain subject to standard restrictions regarding carrying liquids in cabin baggage.

The airports in Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu have already implemented this measure since September 2025, following the installation of modern security control systems that allow for a more detailed inspection of cabin baggage.
