The Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, highlighted a serious case in Craiova on Thursday, where a real estate developer erected a 9-story building near an ammunition depot without respecting the legal distance.
The construction even affects the operation of the military radar at Cârcea, the minister explained during a press conference at the Ministry of Defense.
According to Miruță, the approval of the Ministry of Defense was requested for the Satina Park real estate complex in August 2024. The request initially received a negative response because the distances from military objectives were not respected. "Three weeks later, the exact same request was resubmitted, which this time was approved positively," stated the minister.
Meanwhile, the building is already erected at the structural level, although it does not comply with either the legal distance from the ammunition depots or the height regulations.
The Cârcea Radar Affected by Construction
The Minister of Defense pointed out that the building interferes with the trajectory of the military radar in the area. "There is a military radar that can no longer cover the entire spectrum because the beam hits a certain sector of the circle of this building," explained Miruță, emphasizing the direct impact on surveillance capabilities.
It's Not an Isolated Case
The situation is not unique in Craiova, Miruță also stated. Another project – a logistics depot proposed near the city – would, in turn, affect the performance of the same radar.
"We went to court and the work was ordered to be stopped," the minister specified, adding that the recurrence of such cases "requires additional attention from the ministry."
National-Level Checks and Identification of Those Responsible
The Ministry of Defense has initiated checks at all military units in Romania regarding how approvals are granted for constructions near military objectives.
At the same time, measures have been taken to identify the personnel from the MoD who changed the initial approval in the Craiova case.
"For such things, there is absolutely no tolerance," emphasized Radu Miruță, invoking discipline and strict adherence to the law.
