Another serious train accident in Spain, two days after the rail disaster in Andalusia (Video)

A commuter train was involved in a serious accident on Tuesday in northeastern Spain, during a storm, after hitting a collapsed support wall on the tracks in the province of Barcelona.

The updated toll indicates one dead and at least 37 injured, five of whom are in serious condition.

The incident comes just two days after the train disaster in Andalusia, which resulted in 42 deaths.

Accident during a storm: one dead and dozens injured

According to authorities, the train hit a collapsed support wall on the railway between the Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and Gelida stations, while strong storms were affecting the northeast of the country. Coastal areas in eastern and northwestern Spain are on maximum alert due to severe weather conditions.

Catalonia's regional fire inspector, Claudi Gallardo, stated that all passengers were evacuated from the train.

A passenger trapped inside the train was rescued, and authorities later confirmed that there were no more people inside the train. A search of the area was initiated to rule out other victims.

The injured were transported to the Moisès Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vila Franca hospitals. Of the 37 injured, five are in serious condition, six have suffered moderate injuries, and 26 have minor injuries, according to emergency medical services.

Second railway incident on the same day in Catalonia

A few hours earlier, another train from the Barcelona commuter network derailed on the Blanes – Maçanet-Massanes route. The railway infrastructure operator, Adif, stated that "the track was hit by a stone dislodged by the storm." No casualties were reported in this case.

The Rodalies commuter network was completely suspended for safety checks. According to the El Pais newspaper, approximately 400,000 commuters were affected on Wednesday morning. Railway operators are set to meet with authorities after the inspections are completed.

The Catalonia accident comes just two days after the train disaster near Adamuz, where a train from the private operator Iryo derailed and entered the parallel track, hitting a train from the national company Renfe. The two trains were carrying nearly 500 passengers together. At least 42 people died.
