Catrinel Menghia, known in the film world as Catrinel Marlon, has been honored with the prestigious Starlight International Cinema Award – Best Debut Film at the Cannes Film Festival.
This is a new international recognition for the Romanian actress, a former top model, who is increasingly asserting herself as a director.
### “Girasoli” – a psychological drama
Catrinel Marlon’s directorial debut film is titled „Girasoli” and is an international co-production supported by Cristian Mungiu.
The action takes place in an Italian psychiatric hospital in the 1960s, where two young women – Lucia and Anna – live deep traumas and fight for survival against inhumane treatments. The cast also includes the character Marie D’Amico, a psychiatrist who tries to save one of the patients, facing the abusive system.
The story of the film „Girasoli” is written by Catrinel Menghia Marlon, Francesca Nozzolillo, and Heidrun Schleef, the latter known for her collaborations with renowned European directors.
The film continues to receive recognition: previously, it was awarded the Nastro d’Argento for Best Directorial Debut and included in the selection for the David di Donatello awards.
