PSD to set timetable on Monday for consultations on leaving government

The National Permanent Bureau of the PSD will meet on Monday to establish the schedule for an internal consultation within the party, which could even decide the social democrats’ exit from the government. The announcement was made by the PSD leader, Sorin Grindeanu, after the adoption of the state budget for 2026.

„On Monday, we will have a National Permanent Bureau meeting and we will decide on the schedule,” Grindeanu stated on Friday at the Palace of Parliament.

The decision comes amid increasingly intense discussions within the coalition regarding the future of governance, following the adoption of the 2026 budget, a moment considered by the PSD as a milestone in the current political partnership.

Asked about a possible change in the Prime Minister, the PSD leader avoided a direct answer, emphasizing that the decision will belong to the party members. "We will conduct that internal consultation, and not I, but all PSD members who will vote, nearly 5,000 people, will decide," he said.

In the same context, the PSD conveys that it does not consider supporting a minority government in the event of leaving the government, indicating that such a formula would not have the necessary stability.

Additionally, the social-democratic leaders have ruled out the possibility of an alliance with AUR, clearly distancing themselves from this scenario in the case of a political reconfiguration.

Grindeanu emphasized that the adoption of the budget represents an important step for the country's stability, even though the document has imperfections. "Today we have a budget passed, with good and bad aspects, but Romania has a budget, and that is a good thing," stated the PSD leader, thanking the parliamentarians from both the ruling coalition and opposition for the effort made during the debates, which extended late into the night.

Grindeanu urges the Government

At the same time, he sent a strong message to the Government, demanding that the immediate priority be the management of rising fuel prices. "I encourage the Government, and I even urge them (...) to address and make it a priority for the Government," said Grindeanu, specifying that he does not want to personally come up with solutions, but expects them to be promptly presented by the Executive.

The message comes in the context of the accelerated increase in fuel prices, which has become one of the main public pressure topics on the Government in recent days.

The state budget for 2026 was adopted on Friday by the joint session of Parliament, with 319 votes in favor, 104 against, and one abstention. At the same time, the state social security budget was also adopted, with 314 votes "for," 105 "against," and 12 abstentions.

The budget was adopted after marathon debates in Parliament, which extended into the night, in a tense political atmosphere between the coalition and the opposition.
