Cristi Chivu's reaction after Inter missed out on direct qualification to the Champions League round of 16, despite winning against Borussia Dortmund

Cristian Chivu, the coach of Inter Milan, praised his players’ performance in the away match, which they won 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening, in the 8th (final) round of the main phase of the Champions League in football.

‘We are happy because this team works hard. In the last two months, their growth has been exponential, and a result like this can give us a lot of self-esteem and confidence. At this moment, I am only thinking about Sunday’s match against Cremonese because for me, it is the most important match of the season. We are forced to stay here tonight, and tomorrow we will travel and train, always thinking about the next match, which is always the most important,’ Chivu stated at the end of the match in Dortmund.

'The credit goes to these boys who immediately understood our requirements and what we tried to convey. I believe that the key to everything happening in this group, in this locker room, is humility. There are 25 players who try their best to be protagonists, knowing that they, in turn, have the opportunity to shine and make a significant contribution to the team,' added the former Romanian international.

'We should not look back at what we have not done but take pride in what we have achieved. It was not easy, not even tonight, in this stadium, with this team and the energy that Borussia's fans can offer. We played a serious, mature game. Perhaps we could have been more hungry and concrete in the first half, especially in the situations created by our attackers, but we paid the price for a bit of superficiality,' Inter's coach further stated.

Chivu's team, the leader in Serie A, triumphed 2-0 in the match in Dortmund, through the goals scored in the final minutes of the second half by Federico Dimarco (81) and Andy Diouf (90+4).

Inter Milan finished in tenth place in the final standings of the main phase of the Champions League, with 15 points, and will have to play a playoff to advance to the knockout stage.
