The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emil Hurezeanu, confirms that he will discuss on Friday with coalition leaders about his possible change in position.
Asked about the reasons for this decision, he stated that he will find out tomorrow. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu suggests the need for a reconsideration of collaboration in the context of the new American administration.
Minister Emil Hurezeanu was asked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters if he had discussions with the leaders of the governing coalition about his removal from office following statements by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
Hurezeanu indicated that he will discuss on Friday. "Tomorrow, and from tomorrow onwards, we will talk more," he said.
Asked if he was told why he would be removed from office, the Minister of Foreign Affairs replied: "I will find out tomorrow. We will talk tomorrow."
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu stated on Wednesday in Constanța about Minister of Foreign Affairs Emil Hurezeanu that he is an exceptional diplomat and as Foreign Minister for Europe, he would be highly sought after, but we live "in a different dynamic."
He said it is normal to reconsider collaboration, taking into account the new administration in the United States, and specified that he will have a discussion with interim president Ilie Bolojan on this subject, whether changing Hurezeanu is necessary or not. "Maybe we can find a special envoy," added the Prime Minister.
Also, on Wednesday evening, Ciolacu said that clarifications regarding the maintenance of visas for Romanians traveling to the USA should have come from Hurezeanu.
"Clarifications (regarding the maintenance of visas for Romanian citizens traveling to the USA – ed.) should have come primarily from Romania's ambassador in Washington. These clarifications did not come.
Now there is a rearrangement of the Trump administration, a different way of working, the world is changing (...) and not all institutions have yet started to function as traditionally.
Mr. Hurezeanu is a remarkable diplomat, let's be fair, I have never criticized Mr. Hurezeanu. An exceptional ambassador, and when his appointment was made, it was in a certain context, meanwhile all the diplomatic rules that we knew and that work in Europe do not work the same with President Trump's administration," stated Marcel Ciolacu.
