Free to kill bears

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis signed the decree related to the promulgation of the bear law on Tuesday.

The project adopted by the Chamber of Deputies in an extraordinary session provides that this year, nearly 500 bears can be killed, the prevention quota plus the intervention quota. The same goes for 2025.

The law was adopted as an emergency measure last week following the tragedy in Bucegi, where a 19-year-old girl was killed on the Jepii Mici trail.

The project provides for the killing of the following numbers of bears for the years 2024 and 2025:

  • 426 bears - prevention level
  • 55 bears - intervention level

The Minister of Environment, Mircea Fechet, argues that the brown bear population in Romania is out of control and their relocation is not a solution.
