Garbine Muguruza definitively retires from tennis

Garbine Muguruza, a double Grand Slam champion, the well-known Spanish tennis player, has announced her retirement from professional sports.

Already in the shadows for some time, Garbine, the former world number one and winner of Wimbledon and Roland Garros, has decided to hang up her racket for good, as announced by the WTA. Former world number one Garbine Muguruza has confirmed her immediate retirement from tennis. The 30-year-old player, born in Venezuela, announced her decision on Saturday at a press conference in Madrid, ahead of the Mutua Open: „I feel ready to retire, to open this new chapter in my life. A new era, a new life,” she said in the presence of journalists.

A year ago, the athlete with roots in Venezuela announced that she was taking a long break from tennis, without being concerned lately about a comeback. The 30-year-old athlete, former world number one and winner of Roland Garros 2016 and Wimbledon 2017, Muguruza dropped out of the top 100 WTA after the Australian Open 2023.

Her last official match was in 2023, a game in Lyon, where she received a wild card, clearly lost to 18-year-old Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic.

Muguruza reached the final in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, losing to American Sofia Kenin at the Australian Open 2020. Her best results at the US Open came in 2017 and 2021, but on both occasions, she only made it to the fourth round. In 2021, she scored a surprising victory at the WTA Tour Finals, the Tournament of Champions, entering as the fifth seed and emerging victorious in a display of that tremendously powerful game she had from the baseline.
