One month minus a day after the dismissal of the Bolojan Government through a vote of no confidence, President Nicușor Dan designated a new Prime Minister on Thursday: Eugen Tomac.
Tomac was by the president's side at the announcement made at the Cotroceni Palace.
Nicușor Dan explained the designation of Eugen Tomac: because the parties do not agree with each other, the only solution is for the Prime Minister to be independent of the parties in Parliament.
The president believes that Tomac has "the independence, experience, and values that define him for this position."
"He is a person with the political experience to negotiate with the parties in Parliament because consensus is needed," said Nicușor Dan.
At the end of the statement, the president called on the parliamentary parties to show responsibility in forming the new government.
In turn, Eugen Tomac stated that he will come before Parliament with "a team of specialists, a technical government, not a political one."
He specified that he wants to find "openness and sincere dialogue from all political, democratic, and pro-Western forces in Parliament to invest in a government that will have a single agenda, the common good of the citizens of Romania."
Eugen Tomac has 10 days to form a government and develop the governance program.
Subsequently, the Prime Minister and his cabinet will go to Parliament where they need 233 votes from senators and deputies.
Spotmedia.ro presented LIVE TEXT the statements of President Nicușor Dan and designated Prime Minister Eugen Tomac:
- I designate Eugen Tomac to form the government from the position of Prime Minister.
- In May 2025, Romanians had elections and turned out in large numbers to vote. In my opinion, they voted more negatively than positively because they had two fears. The first fear was that Romania's pro-Western direction could be called into question. The second fear, an economic one.
- In June 2025, four parties and minorities formed a coalition and took over the government.
- One year from this moment, Romania's external image and the confidence of its partners are much better than a year ago, and the financial situation is much better.
- However, tensions arose between the coalition parties, and for many politicians, party interest prevailed over national interest.
- It seems that a part of society is more interested in how these political disputes end than in Romania's policies as a state.
- Who is to blame for how this coalition worked? We had this extensive debate in society. This is democracy, people debate and form an opinion about what the parties they voted for did.
- Now it is more important to look to the future. Because the parties do not agree with each other, the only solution is for the Prime Minister to be independent of the parties in Parliament.
- Romanians want a pro-Western direction, maintaining financial stability, a successful completion of the PNRR, and defining the budget for 2027. Romanians want reform of state institutions, digitization, and limiting corruption.
- I chose a Prime Minister who has the political experience to negotiate with the parties in Parliament because consensus is needed.
- It is an act of responsibility on my part, and I expect the same responsibility from the parties.
Eugen Tomac Speaks
- I understand the difficult context we are going through, I know the expectations of Romanians.
- My vision is clear. Romania is in a moment that requires responsibility.
- I say responsibility because it is the foundation on which everything is built.
- I take on this mission in good faith to propose to the country a professional government team that will work for the citizens.
- Therefore, I want to find openness and sincere dialogue from all political, democratic, and pro-Western forces in Parliament to invest in a government that will have a single agenda, the common good of the citizens of Romania.
- I understand the political stakes, they are legitimate and natural in a democratic state, but I know that Romania now needs national projects carried out to completion and clear objectives.
- I will present to Parliament a team of specialists, a technical government, not a political one.
- I assure you that the team I will form will act with great responsibility towards the public budget.
- The citizen will be at the center of every effort.
