The General Mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, argues that the court suspension of the resolutions adopted at the extraordinary congress of the PNL is proof that „the system works.” Furthermore, he claims that in Romania there are moments when „certain buttons are pushed” to influence important decisions.
In an intervention on B1 TV, Ciucu insisted that he is not referring to the entire judicial system or to all state institutions, but he believes that certain cases are treated preferentially and that the way the actions regarding the PNL Congress were resolved raises questions.
The statements come a week after Bucharest Tribunal suspended the resolutions adopted at the extraordinary PNL Congress in June, a decision that forced the party to temporarily revert to the status from 2025.
"The Congress was canceled because the system works"
"When I talked about the system, I did not intend to generalize. At that time, I was at the PNL Congress, a congress that was canceled because the system works and certain buttons are pressed at key moments," Ciucu stated.
He specified that he is not accusing the entire judiciary system or all law enforcement institutions. "We are not talking about the entirety of the judiciary system, we are not talking about the totality and integrity of law enforcement institutions, but in the judiciary system, one reaches through competitions organized by politicians, and in law enforcement systems, one reaches through mechanisms that are obscure to us," the mayor affirmed.
Ciucu says that the court decisions regarding the PNL Congress should be carefully analyzed. "After seeing what happened, how certain cases were treated with priority, how they were chosen, how it was decided who judges them, these things should be much better clarified in Romania," he stated.
PNL: Congress decisions comply with the law
After the decision of the Bucharest Tribunal, the liberal leadership held an informal meeting and stated that the resolutions adopted at the extraordinary congress fully respect the "spirit and letter of the law".
PNL announced that, until the legal situation is clarified, the party will operate based on the statute adopted in July 2025 and will analyze solutions to maintain the direction set by the Congress vote.
