The US Embassy in Bucharest transmitted, on Tuesday, a day after the official counting of votes in the Romanian presidential elections concluded, that they look forward to collaborating with the new president, Nicușor Dan, as well as with the new Government that will be installed.
„We look forward to collaborating with Nicușor Dan, as the President of Romania, and with the new government, to promote our common priorities, such as defense, energy, and commercial partnerships,” wrote the officials of the United States diplomatic representation in Romania on Facebook on Tuesday.
The message has sparked numerous comments, some noting the lack of congratulations to the winner, while others are ironic.
"Maybe it's the other way around. The President of Romania is waiting for the accreditation of the new ambassador. So... What's there to discuss with the embassy's goalkeeper? P.S. Admit it, he wrote this masterpiece of a statement, didn't he?" wrote a user on the network.
"You missed a 'Congratulations' at the beginning of the message. This is still the US Embassy page, not Donald Trump's page," someone wrote.
"Well, it took a few days to get the news in the US, didn't it? Are you receiving news from pigeons now?" is another comment.
"When a superpower is silent, it rarely does so by mistake. And when it speaks without saying anything, it's a sign that every comma has been weighed. The message conveyed by the US Embassy in Bucharest regarding Nicușor Dan is not, in any diplomatic register, a congratulation. It is rather a notification of geopolitical cohabitation. A sterile formulation that does not express joy, support, or even a basic form of symbolic recognition. Instead, it bluntly conveys an intention: we will collaborate on what interests us - defense, energy, commerce," explained a user.
The US Embassy in Bucharest posted on Facebook, before the first round of the Romanian presidential elections, several messages, including the critical statement made by American Vice President JD Vance in February about European democracies: "A democratic mandate cannot be obtained by censoring opponents or ignoring the electorate."
The diplomatic representation previously announced that US Ambassador to Bucharest Kathleen Kavalec is stepping down. The Deputy Chief of Mission, Michael Dickerson, will serve as the Charge d'Affaires ad interim at the embassy.
