Protesters in Bucharest attacked the gendarmes, set fire to street furniture, and overturned a car

Several people have been detained following violent clashes that erupted in front of the BEC headquarters, where supporters of Călin Georgescu gathered, dissatisfied with the invalidation of his candidacy.

The Capital Gendarmerie reported that individuals had thrown various objects at the gendarmes, including pyrotechnic materials. Furthermore, they had set fire to street furniture and overturned a television station’s car. Additionally, multiple pyrotechnic materials were used. At least two gendarmes were injured by objects thrown by protesters.

The Gendarmerie increased the forces on-site to manage the demonstrators.

„We are trying to evacuate to avoid any damage and extract the violent individuals,” said Marius Militaru, the Gendarmerie spokesperson, on Antena3.

Here is how the violent events unfolded:

According to a Gendarmerie briefing, protesters are throwing objects at gendarmes and using pyrotechnic materials. Some participants have set fire to various pieces of street furniture and overturned a television station’s car.

Previously, some demonstrators had broken cobblestones to throw at the gendarmes. Small-sized blunt objects were thrown at the gendarmes, and during the pushing of metal panels by protesters, a gendarme was injured in the leg.

The gendarmes gradually used irritant-tear gas sprayers against those committing violence.

The Gendarmerie urges all law-abiding individuals to distance themselves from the violent groups and move to another area where antisocial acts are not committed.

„This behavior is extremely serious and can have consequences on the freedom of individuals who choose to commit such violence. We highlight that there are operational recordings in the public space that will help us identify all those who commit antisocial acts,” the source stated.

„A female individual repeatedly forced the metal panel device, and despite being repeatedly warned by the gendarmes to stop this action and remain calm, she continued, for which she was removed from the crowd and will be fined administratively,” informed the Bucharest Gendarmerie.

Tensions continue between the gendarmes and Călin Georgescu’s supporters, who are throwing bottles and other plastic objects, as well as eggs, at the law enforcement.

„This behavior is extremely serious and can have consequences on the freedom of individuals who choose to commit such violence. We highlight that there are operational recordings in the public space that will help us identify all those who commit antisocial acts,” the source noted.
