Monica Macovei, definitively convicted after the accident in which she hit a motorcyclist with her car

Former Minister of Justice, Monica Macovei, has received a final conviction in the Mangalia accident case.

Macovei is required to attend a social reintegration program and perform community service, as decided by the Court of Appeal in Constanța.

The judges have accepted the appeal filed by Monica Macovei against the sentence pronounced in April 2024 by the Mangalia Court, where she was sentenced to six months of suspended imprisonment. Upon rehearing, they have imposed on her to attend a social reintegration program run by the Bucharest probation service or organized in collaboration with community institutions.

„Based on art. 93 para. (3) of the Criminal Code, the defendant is obliged to perform unpaid community service throughout the supervision period, within the Archdiocese of Bucharest or the General Directorate for Social Assistance and Child Protection of Sector II Bucharest – for a period of 60 days,” is the decision of the Court of Appeal.

The court has upheld the rest of the lower court’s provisions that do not contradict this decision. Thus, Monica Macovei has been definitively sentenced to suspended imprisonment for the car accident.

According to the court portal, the court has suspended the execution of the sentence under supervision for a period of 2 years.

According to the decision, Monica Macovei is obliged to pay the court costs advanced by the state, in the amount of 10,000 lei.

In February, the court ordered the civil aspect of the case to be separated and a new file to be formed.

Monica Macovei was indicted in September 2023 for unintentional bodily harm after being involved in a road accident near the city of Mangalia, where she crossed into the opposite lane and hit a motorcyclist.

On October 8, 2022, Monica Macovei was driving a car on DN 39, near Mangalia, and „due to entering the opposite lane, collided with the motorcycle driven by I.C., causing injuries that required 110-120 days of medical care, with life being endangered if complications arise,” as reported by representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of Appeal in Constanța.
