A prisoner convicted of rape, who escaped on Tuesday from a work site of Craiova Penitentiary, was fatally shot by police the same evening after fleeing at the sight of law enforcement and not complying with legal orders.
The 37-year-old man had been sentenced to 11 years and four months in prison and had managed to leave the prison work area, immediately becoming the subject of a search by authorities.
After several hours of searching, the police managed to locate him in the outskirts of the commune of Brabova, Dolj County. Upon the arrival of intervention teams, he attempted to escape, running towards a wooded area on the edge of the locality.
Police intervention
According to the Dolj County Police Inspectorate, the man did not comply with repeated orders from the police officers of the Criminal Investigations Service of Dolj, Section 2 of the Rural Police Breasta, and the Special Actions Service fighters.
In these circumstances, law enforcement first fired warning shots, and subsequently used the equipment at their disposal to stop him.
After being wounded, the police attempted resuscitation maneuvers, but to no avail. Subsequently, the man's death was declared.
The case was taken over by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Dolj Tribunal, which will determine the exact circumstances of the incident and the intervention methods used by law enforcement.
