A lawyer from Bucharest, a member of PNL Sector 1, was caught red-handed by DNA prosecutors while receiving 60,000 euros, part of a much larger sum of 500,000 euros, which she allegedly demanded to intervene in the resolution of some cases, judicial sources told Agerpres.
According to the same sources, the act is being investigated as influence peddling.
UPDATE - PNL announced on Wednesday evening that lawyer Adriana Georgescu will be suspended from her membership in the National Liberal Party, according to internal procedures, as soon as an official statement from the National Anticorruption Directorate on this matter is available.
Judicial sources indicate that two individuals were caught red-handed on Wednesday by DNA prosecutors while receiving the sum of 60,000 euros. The money represented a installment of a total of 500,000 euros, a sum that was allegedly demanded for interventions in cases and for facilitating administrative decisions.
One of the individuals caught is lawyer Adriana Georgescu, a member of PNL Sector 1, while the other is a man who presented himself as a "SIE general," without actually holding this position, according to the sources cited.
Promises of influence in cases and public institutions
According to information published by Adevărul, the lawyer allegedly claimed that she could influence the resolution of cases pending at DNA or the Bucharest Tribunal. Additionally, she promised interventions to finalize contracts or for job placements in national companies under the Government's authority.
The same sources indicate that the lawyer gave the impression that she had access to individuals within the Presidential Administration to strengthen her credibility in front of those from whom she demanded money.
A "SIE general" without rank and without function
In the same operation, an individual who presented himself as a "SIE general" was also caught, although he does not hold this position, according to judicial sources. His role in the influence peddling mechanism is being analyzed by prosecutors.
PNL candidate in 2020: "The citizen must be placed at the center of the administration"
Adriana Georgescu ran for a seat in the Sector 1 Local Council in 2020 on behalf of PNL. In her messages to the electorate at that time, she talked about "improving the quality of administrative acts," "decisional transparency," and "a clear set of rules and principles" that should underpin local public administration.
In the same context, Adriana Georgescu said she would act "not for party or individual interests," promising to prioritize the public interest.
The investigation is ongoing, and DNA prosecutors will determine all the circumstances in which the acts were allegedly committed.
