Murder solved after 23 years: a man from Buzău has been sent to trial for extremely serious murder

The Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Buzău Tribunal announced on Thursday the indictment of a man identified 23 years after committing a crime.

The defendant M.G., already in prison for other offenses, is accused of particularly serious murder.

According to the prosecutors, on the night of January 23-24, 2002, the man, accompanied by his then concubine, broke into the home of an 81-year-old woman in the commune of Smeeni, Buzău County, with the intention of stealing money and goods.

After being discovered by the victim, he violently attacked her, repeatedly hitting her with an axe on the head, shoulder, chest, and hand. The injuries inflicted led to the woman's death, confirmed by the forensic autopsy report.

Following the assault, the defendant stole several items from the house, which he stored in a travel bag.

In Prison for Another Crime

Currently, M.G. is incarcerated and serving a 25-year prison sentence for another crime and robbery, committed in September 2002, as stated in the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Buzău Tribunal press release. He still has approximately two years left to serve from this sentence.

During his detention, he was also convicted in 2011 for assault after attacking a prison officer.

The case of the 2002 crime remained unsolved for over two decades. Prosecutors and police conducted complex investigations, including witness interviews and re-interviews, special surveillance measures, and checks in several prisons across the country. These efforts led to the identification of the perpetrator and his indictment.
