Klaus Iohannis's reaction after PSD's decision to withdraw from the discussions for the future coalition

President Klaus Iohannis reacted on Thursday to the PSD’s decision to withdraw from the negotiations regarding the formation of the new government, stating that the last thing Romania needs is an extended crisis, and such a situation must be avoided at all costs.

He addressed political leaders, stating that it is not the time for petty quarrels and specified that he will convene consultations for the government formation as soon as possible in the coming days.

"Romania is in a very complicated situation. We have a war at the border. We have hybrid attacks against Romania that led to the cancellation of the presidential elections, an unprecedented situation. We have a very complicated situation in the European Union, where the states considered to be the engines of the Union have internal problems with government formation, snap elections, and others. And the last thing Romania needs is an extended governmental and parliamentary crisis," said the President from Brussels.

"Such a situation must be avoided at all costs. Therefore, considering some public statements made in the last hours, I address all political leaders, the parties that will enter Parliament. It is not the time for petty quarrels.

It is time for each leader to see themselves as a statesman, to sit at the table for discussions, for negotiations, to have a government as quickly as possible," he conveyed to the presidents of the political parties.

"I will convene consultations in the coming days, very quickly, to see how we progress," Iohannis specified.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced on Thursday on his Facebook page that PSD is withdrawing from the discussions for the formation of the Executive and will vote in Parliament for a right-wing government.

"PSD has endured enough of such attitudes, without commenting and without making a scene as others have done. This way of working is totally counterproductive in front of the people. Therefore, PSD is withdrawing with dignity from the discussions, but we are not shirking responsibility.

We will vote in Parliament for a right-wing government! We do this because this country urgently needs a government to manage current issues until the upcoming presidential elections. Romania should not be thrown into turmoil by childish attitudes and foolish pride," stated Marcel Ciolacu.
