The Gireadă family saga: mother, father, and now daughter control a mayoralty in Botoșani

The Gireadă family saga continues at the helm of Mihai Eminescu commune, in Botoșani County. After the father and mother took turns serving as mayor for almost two decades, now the baton has been passed to the daughter.

Andreea-Cristina Alecu-Gireadă, supported by the PSD, won the partial local elections with 1,330 votes, which represents 41.54%, clearly surpassing the PNL candidate, Ionuț-Cristian Sigartău, who obtained 25.70%.

The new mayor succeeds her father, Verginel Gireadă, who was forced to resign in October after reaching a plea deal with the DNA in a bribery case. He led the town hall through several mandates between 2004 and 2012, was a PNL deputy from 2012 to 2016, and in 2020 returned to the mayoral office, reclaiming the position. Meanwhile, between 2012 and 2020, the town hall was led by his wife, Aneta Gireadă, as reported by News.ro.

After switching to the PSD in 2024 and winning a new term, Verginel Gireadă was forced to step down, being accused of receiving bribes for facilitating public contracts and expediting payments. In this context, the partial elections were organized.

Andreea-Cristina Alecu-Gireadă announced that she will continue the projects initiated by the former administration. "I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me. We have shown that we want the same thing - the continued development of Mihai Eminescu commune. I guarantee that I will be a mayor open to dialogue and close to all the residents of the commune," she wrote on Facebook.
