Romanian President Klaus Iohannis refuses to give details about the discussions he is having regarding his candidacy for the NATO leadership.
The Romanian head of state was asked on Wednesday about the fact that there have been no opinions from allies regarding his candidacy and why this is happening.
"Regarding NATO, discussions are ongoing, they are very intense, but these discussions are different from other formats.
NATO issues are not discussed publicly, they are not made public. So we continue as before.
We have had some good discussions, diplomatically speaking. They continue, and we will see when we have a result," stated Klaus Iohannis, before attending the extraordinary meeting of the European Council in Brussels.
On April 3, the Romanian president stated that he does not intend to withdraw his candidacy for the position of NATO Secretary General or negotiate another position at the European level.
At that time, he also specified that although he saw that other foreign officials announced support for Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for this position, he still considers his chances reasonable.
Alongside Mark Rutte, 90% of NATO countries, led by the USA, have explicitly reaffirmed the option in a not very happy tone for Klaus Iohannis.
The mainstream media, from Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung to the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, and Le Figaro, has been extremely critical of President Iohannis, not only giving him no chance but presenting in severe terms the way he raises issues within NATO with the border war.
The decision regarding the new NATO chief will be made at the summer summit in Washington.
