George Simion speculates on any mistake made by the parties from the former coalition, and AUR is growing in polls without doing anything, according to UDMR leader, Kelemen Hunor.
„It’s normal for George Simion to speculate on any mistake of ours. He’s in opposition, now it would be the height of absurdity for him not to speculate on the coalition’s mistakes.
And he actually just sits, watches the game, eats some popcorn, drinks a beer, and grows. He doesn't need to do anything. During this period, they didn't have an offer, they didn't have solutions, but, due to people's discontent, lack of trust, a party that apparently is anti-system is growing, but in fact, it's not, we all know," stated the UDMR president in an interview with HotNews.
Kelemen Hunor also said that Romania has never faced such a political deadlock before.
"All periods had their characteristics, with problems, with solutions. But we've never reached such a deadlock. We haven't really had such situations as we have today, in 2026. The presidential elections weren't annulled until 2024 when the first round was canceled. We probably never had the mistakes of 2024, with the merging of those elections that shouldn't have been merged. And all these wrong decisions, I believe, led to this result," Kelemen Hunor thinks.
In his opinion, a solution must be found in July for the formation of a new government.
"I believe that at this moment we are on the homestretch towards the end, towards the finish. We need to find a solution in July. Because now people are still watching the World Cup, people are going on vacation, people may forget about politics. But the World Cup will end tomorrow or the day after. People will return from vacations and turn back to politics and say, 'But you haven't solved anything. What have you done? We don't have a government. And without a government with full powers, we see blockages everywhere'," Kelemen Hunor stated.
When asked about the solution he sees for the formation of a new government, the UDMR leader stated that there are several.
"There are several solutions. And parliamentary arithmetic gives you several majority solutions, we can go through them very quickly. The big coalition, which worked until the censure motion, PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR, minorities. It's something stable, in terms of parliamentary arithmetic. It doesn't work because the censure motion initiated by PSD and AUR was voted for.
Ok. The second solution is also majority-based. PSD, PNL, USR, minorities without UDMR. It's an arithmetic majority, in terms of parliamentary mandates. Such a majority can be formed. The problem here is that PSD doesn't want with USR, USR doesn't want with PSD, PNL has a congress resolution that they don't want with PSD, it simply doesn't fit.
So we move on. There's another very slim majority, 237-238 votes, something like that: PSD, PNL, UDMR, as it worked until June last year, the group of national minorities.
And here again, the problem arises that PNL has a congress resolution. PSD was more flexible here, Friday night, at Cotroceni, when we met with President Dan, they didn't say no, but PNL has a congress resolution. How can you overcome this resolution?
You have to convene the congress, I don't know, I'm not familiar with their statute, but it's a problem that needs to be solved there. And that's why it's hard to take the next step, and I said we have a month until the end of July to find a solution," explained Kelemen Hunor.
Without AUR, no minority government can be invested
Kelemen Hunor believes that without AUR, no minority government can be invested, one of the two major parties, PSD and PNL, is withdrawn.
"All other variants, if we all say we don't want with AUR, that now at this moment everyone says PNL, PSD, USR, and we say we don't want with AUR, we don't want AUR votes, then all other variants are minority. PSD, monocolor, minority. Ok, who votes?
If PNL doesn't vote, because there's no parliamentary agreement, USR doesn't vote, UDMR votes in vain because there's no majority without 10-15 votes from AUR. That's what I was saying, that without AUR, no minority government can be invested, if one of the two major parties, PSD and PNL, is withdrawn. The other option, PNL, USR, UDMR, without PSD, doesn't have a majority.
Again, you have to go look for votes from AUR. Which, from my point of view and from the colleagues' point of view, as we have discussed, is excluded. So, at this moment, if we don't reach a parliamentary agreement regarding rotation, reciprocity, and so far we haven't, then any minority government from which PSD or PNL is withdrawn remains at the will, in the hands, at the desire of those from AUR," said the UDMR leader.
