The President of UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, calls on parties to abandon constant confrontation and to accept compromises for the formation of a government with full powers.
He says that if the Siegfried Mureșan Government does not receive the Parliament’s vote, Nicușor Dan will convene new consultations and make a new designation, without Romania having to wait another three months.
Kelemen argues that a possible new governance formula could include specialists supported by parties, but who do not necessarily come from the front line of politics.

"For years, and especially in the last period, in the last half-year, there have been such strong statements that it's hard to eventually reach a common ground and when you have a common goal. Because here, I am convinced that both us, USR, PNL, and PSD want a government with full rights and powers.
Because where we are now is catastrophic. And if I step out of Parliament for a moment and look at the current Parliament, my head hurts. I'm horrified that we are unable to - after 140, 150 days - vote for a government with full rights," Kelemen Hunor declared on Wednesday at RFI Romania.
He added that there is also a crisis related to lack of trust.
"You have to leave room for hello in politics, in life, and in any profession, because ultimately there is no other way. In life, you have to leave room for hello. Now, if no one leaves room for hello, how can you overcome?
You can't enter into a civil political war or a total war in politics. You asked for people's votes. People with good faith voted for you. You said you have solutions, that you want to find solutions. You will need compromise in Romania, in Romanian politics, and beyond," emphasized the UDMR leader.
It's not possible just with the sword, with the rifle, with the machine gun
Kelemen reiterated the need for compromises.
"Without compromise, you cannot reach a common goal, a common objective. So, if you want to serve the common good, then you must seek compromises. That's it. It's not possible just with the sword, with the rifle, with the machine gun.
If someone doesn't agree with me, then they are surely my enemy. This perception, this idea is completely wrong in a society and I think there have been continuous mistakes in this regard in the last period. Therefore, I believe that the current symptom, specifically between the designated Prime Minister and PSD, is just the consequence of what has happened this year or in the past years," stated the UDMR president.
If the Siegfried Mureșan Government does not pass the Parliament vote on Wednesday, Kelemen believes that President Nicușor Dan will quickly convene new consultations with political parties and it will not take another three months until a new prime minister is designated.
"Let's see what the Constitution says. Before designation, the president consults with parliamentary parties. So, if this government does not pass after today's vote, then, according to the Constitution, the president will convene some consultations.
I am convinced that he will follow the Constitution and after the consultations, he will make a new designation. When it will happen, I don't know, I have no idea, but I don't think we will wait another three months without a designation. I believe it will happen relatively quickly, it needs to happen relatively quickly," Kelemen Hunor further affirmed, as quoted by News.ro.
The President cannot be obliged by anyone
He specified that the President of Romania cannot be obliged by anyone to trigger early elections.
"On the other hand, it also says in the Constitution that after two failures and after 60 days, he can dissolve Parliament. Here, the Constitution grants the president a very high appreciation, a very, very large freedom, and it's good to be like that. So, the president cannot be obliged by anyone, neither by politicians, nor by society, to decide against his beliefs.
So, if he is convinced that early elections do not help us, you cannot in any way force him to dissolve Parliament because the Constitution says 'may dissolve.' And from this point of view, this possibility exists, but there is no obligation for the president," explained the UDMR leader.
Maybe at the next designation, people will be a bit more flexible
He added that he hopes President Nicușor Dan will conduct consultations relatively quickly.
"Maybe at the next designation, people will be a bit more flexible. My colleagues, after a very long time in the interim government, either want to go into the Opposition or have the capacity to decide.
Because today, the ministers do not have the possibility, the Government does not have the possibility to come up with bills, public policies, emergency ordinances, commitments, nothing. And it is, from this point of view, extremely, extremely harmful for every minister who truly wants to do something," stated the UDMR president, as cited by News.ro.
He believes that the President of Romania will try to take into account that the Prime Minister's personality is extremely important and that "it must be an acceptable personality for Grindeanu and Bolojan."
Asked if he sees a possible government that includes both PSD and PNL, Kelemen Hunor replied: "Not today. At least with politicians from the front line, no. But with people who are designated, proposed by parties, and supported by parties.
And not necessarily politicians who have been involved in party politics, yes. In such a situation, I think it is possible, collaboration could happen.
So, it's a possible compromise. Ok, we come with people in the Government, each with individuals who have not been involved in party politics. They are specialists, we all support this government. And at least let's enter 2027 with a budget, the revision, a few laws by the end of the year, and the budget for 2027, because whether you like it or not, Romania will need funding to cover the deficit."
