The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Consulate in Manchester, has taken steps with local authorities, social services, and community services within the Leeds local council following the Thursday night violence between Romanians and police.
The revolt started when social workers came to take the children from a Romanian family, according to information posted on social networks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifies in a press release that it took action last night following the reports in the media, and confirms that everything started from the case of some children.
"The Consul General of Romania in Manchester is in constant contact both with the family of Romanian citizens involved in the incident and with local police authorities to monitor the situation.
In the context of discussions with Romanian citizens, the representative of the Consulate General of Romania in Manchester firmly advised them to respect the instructions of local authorities, to remain calm, and to take the necessary legal steps to clarify the situation of the minors in question, in accordance with applicable legislation, court decisions, in the interest of the minors".
Until the situation in the area where Romanian citizens live is stabilized, the Consul General of Romania in Manchester has been in direct contact with representatives of local religious communities, who have conveyed the same recommendations to Romanian citizens.
"Based on the information available at this time, the situation of the minors has not been previously brought to the attention of the consulate either by the parents of the minors, which is why they did not request consular assistance, nor by local authorities.
The Consulate General of Romania in Manchester continues the dialogue with the family of Romanian citizens involved in this case, with local authorities, and with representatives of the Romanian community to identify the best legal solutions for resolving the situation of Romanian minor citizens, in conditions of calm and safety".
An angry crowd shouting in Romanian caused a real uprising in a neighborhood in the British city of Leeds. People overturned a police car and set fire to a bus. Several fires were lit along the street.
"Let it go down in history! Let the riot police from Bucharest come, we'll overthrow them too," can be heard in a recording of the moment when the crowd overturns the police car.
