Resignation of Ciolacu, the poisoned gift that derails the campaign

The breaking of the governing coalition and Marcel Ciolacu’s resignation represent a dangerous development in the fragile electoral context and a poisoned gift from the PSD.

**Why?**

1. Vacating the position of prime minister now turns the campaign into one about the future government, the future majority, and, above all, the future prime minister.

Simion’s electorate receives an additional stake to vote for him, Călin Georgescu, [who has just escaped some elements of judicial control,](https://spotmedia.ro/stiri/eveniment/control-judiciar-redus-pentru-calin-georgescu-nu-mai-trebuie-sa-anunte-veniturile-si-poate-detine-arme) can become an active player in the campaign, as the idea of a president-prime minister tandem is immediately relevant.

The narrative is easy to anticipate: Călin Georgescu or early elections. And in case of early elections, I don’t think it’s hard to imagine what score the extremists would have.

Moreover, this change seems to be a first concrete victory for Simion.

Nicușor Dan is under pressure to announce a coalition and a prime minister candidate. In the midst of a government crisis, the topic cannot be avoided. The theme he aims to focus on, „East or West? Russia or EU?”, is overshadowed by this immediate current issue that is, by excellence, within the president’s duties.

Nicușor Dan is struggling to keep the topic away, postponing it until May 19, now it’s about the presidential elections. It’s very hard for someone running for president to ignore the huge political crisis and people’s main concern – what government they will have, who will be the prime minister, who will pay their pensions and salaries.

How could this be a secondary element? The strategic East-West option won’t catch on if it’s a sterile, theoretical issue, detached from the citizen’s agenda and fears.

But on the other hand, what can Nicușor Dan propose? Without the PSD, there is no majority, that is absolutely clear in the current parliamentary configuration.

So he will either have to beg the PSD, or a minority government of PNL-USR and eventually UDMR, although it’s unlikely that Kelemen Hunor will accept this suicidal adventure.

A minority government facing opposition from both PSD and extremists is doomed, especially given Romania’s terrible economic conditions and the necessary measures to be taken.

Of course, the proposal could be Ilie Bolojan, but still under the conditions of an interim sacrificial government.

**If he avoids the topic, Nicușor Dan risks appearing to hide something or be out of touch with the current events. If he engages in it, he cannot avoid antagonizing someone. So a very bad equation.**

2. On Monday, the Government tried to borrow from international markets and failed. **After entering a government crisis, there is a risk of insolvency**, as forewarned by Marcel Ciolacu.

There is no better campaign for George Simion, who will exploit people’s fears to the fullest.

3. Sent into opposition with AUR, **PSD will be free from any image constraints**, **without having to worry about the budget**, the deficit, and the money for pensions and salaries. In this situation, they let their voters go where they want, and it’s not very difficult to anticipate who they feel closer to.

Yes, Marcel Ciolacu says that as long as he is president, a coalition with AUR is not possible. And if the PSD electorate massively votes for Simion?
