A helicopter crashed Thursday in the Hudson River near Manhattan, announced the New York Police Department.

The New York Police Department reported that the helicopter crashed near the West Side Highway and Spring Street in New York, close to the Holland Tunnel, connecting Manhattan to Jersey City, as reported by Sky News.

The New York Fire Department stated that they were informed about a helicopter crash in the water at 3:17 local time. Several rescue teams were dispatched to the scene conducting rescue operations, they added.

One person has died, as reported by CBS News, cited by BBC.

The New York Police Department told CBS that there were four people on board the aircraft and all were rescued from the water.

According to the flight tracking website FlightRadar, it appears that the helicopter involved in the accident flew for 15 minutes after taking off from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport.

The helicopter is a Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV owned by a private owner, the source added. It is a single-engine turbine helicopter that can typically accommodate seven passengers.

Collision between two planes at Washington Airport

Also on Thursday, two passenger planes collided at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Several members of Congress were on board one of the planes.

Both aircraft belong to American Airlines. The plane carrying members of Congress was struck while on the runway by the wingtip of the other aircraft.

No injuries were reported, according to USA Today.

The FAA has launched an investigation. Both aircraft have been taken out of service for maintenance teams to inspect. Passengers have been transferred to other planes.

On January 29, a collision occurred between a military helicopter and a commercial plane at this airport, resulting in 67 fatalities.

The plane was supposed to land at the capital's airport, while the helicopter was navigating in a crowded flight corridor.
