Romania ranks 4th in the list of the most expensive electricity markets in the European Union, both in terms of prices in September and in the ranking calculated from the beginning of the year.
The data analyzed by Profit.ro show a significant increase in spot market prices compared to August and, especially, compared to September 2025.
The average price of electricity reached 176.14 euros/MWh in September. This level is 16.5% higher than the one recorded in August, when the average was 151.16 euros/MWh, and 81% above the average price from September last year, which was 97.95 euros/MWh.
Romania's evolution has been influenced by the increase in energy prices at the European level, against the backdrop of less favorable weather conditions, as well as the shutdown of the Cernavodă nuclear power plant.
In September, only three European markets had higher prices than Romania: Italy, Ireland, and Hungary.
While Italy and Ireland are usually among the most expensive energy markets in the EU, the high levels recorded in Romania and Hungary are also found in other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, such as Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bulgaria.
The situation indicates the existence of regional difficulties, which may be related to energy transport capacity and/or production and storage.
Romania also ranks 4th in the average prices list from the beginning of the year until now. The average for this period is approximately 126 euros/MWh.
In this ranking, Romania is surpassed by Italy, Ireland, and Hungary, with the other markets in the region following behind: Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Bulgaria.
