A young woman was attacked by a bear on the Jepii Mici trail, near Valea Spumoasă, Romania.
The rescuers who went to help found her dead.
Recovering her body is difficult, as the terrain is rugged, and the bear is still in the area.
"A rescue team from Salvamont Prahova went to the area and, a short while ago, rappelled down the valley, where they found the victim, unfortunately deceased.
The recovery operation is extremely difficult due to the rugged terrain and the continued presence of the bear, which is approximately 10-15 m away from the mountain rescuers.
The tourist who witnessed the entire event and called 112 was taken care of by the mountain gendarmes and brought down to Bușteni," Salvamont's statement said.
The 19-year-old woman was hiking with her boyfriend when the bear appeared. The man desperately called 112 for help, saying that the animal had grabbed her and taken her away.
The mountain rescuers who arrived at the scene did not immediately find the victim, only the young man who had called 112.
The Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU) Prahova issued an RO-ALERT message in the town of Bușteni to signal the presence of a bear in populated/congested areas. The animal was seen in the Caraiman Waterfall area, as specified by ISU Prahova.
