The big surprise in the 200-meter freestyle heats that could open the way for David Popovici to his first Olympic medal

David Popovici is the favorite of specialists in the 200-meter freestyle event, a race he dominated on Sunday morning in the Olympic Games in Paris.

There, at La Defense Arena, David, 19 years old, achieved the best time of the heats with 1:45.65, qualifying in style for the competition’s semifinals, which will take place on the same day, around 10 p.m., LIVE on SpotMedia.ro.

The Romanian swimmer can also benefit from a major surprise that emerged in these 200-meter qualifications. It's about the non-qualification of Pan Zhanle, the world record holder from China in the 100-meter freestyle.

The Asian had a very poor race and missed the qualification for the semifinals, after swimming 1:49.47, only the 22nd time in the heats. However, he remains a favorite in the 100-meter event, where earlier this year in Doha he clocked a fabulous 46.80 seconds.
