American journalists have not forgotten that they labeled David Popovici as a „rising star” three years ago when it was announced that he would be an exceptional athlete, considering the successful performances at a young age.
"The boy who could be king," that's how journalists from Swimming World described David Popovici in 2021.

Popovici made up ground in the 200m freestyle event on Monday night, prevailing with a time of 1:44.72. How did he win the Olympic gold? "He extended his arm perfectly towards the touch point," the Americans further wrote.
David Popovici made a fabulous recovery in the last 50 meters of the race and stopped the clock first at 1:44.72. Thus, he became an Olympic champion for the first time in his career. Matthew Richards, with 1:44.74, and Luke Hobson, with 1:44.79, completed the podium in the 200m freestyle race.
