Double Grand Slam champion, Simona Halep, 32 years old, has announced her withdrawal from the WTA 1000 Masters tournament in Madrid due to medical issues.
The organizers of the tournament in the Spanish capital have indicated that Simona Halep will not participate in this edition, as she is still not fully recovered from the shoulder and knee problems she had after her return to competition in Miami, writes EuroNews.
According to the information from the aforementioned television station, which has a team of journalists present at Caja Magica, Halep made this radical decision because she does not feel physically comfortable and fully recovered to return to competitive circuit. It must be noted, however, that as of now, the announcement has not been officially confirmed.
Halep had a wild card for the main draw in Madrid and would have found out her first opponent on Sunday, at the draw ceremony, scheduled for 7 pm. Successively, our athlete announced her withdrawal before the meeting with Ukraine in the Billie Jean King Cup, and also for the WTA 125 tournament in Oeiras.
The Madrid tournament would have been the first for the Romanian alongside her new coach, Carlos Martinez.
Simona Halep won the WTA 1000 competition in Madrid twice, in 2016 and 2017. The former WTA world number one also played two finals at Caja Magica, in 2014 (lost to Sharapova) and 2019 (lost to Kiki Bertens).
