The Basque team Real Sociedad has won the Spanish King’s Cup for the fourth time in history, after a dramatic final that ended in a penalty shootout against Atletico de Madrid, the big favorite of the last act.
Sociedad triumphed after a 2-2 draw at the end of regular time, and then 4-3 on penalties.
In a final played in Seville, where Atletico clearly started as the favorite, especially after eliminating Barcelona from the Champions League quarterfinals, Sociedad made the big move. After 15 seconds, Barrenetxea opened the scoring from Guedes' cross. Lookman equalized in the 19th minute, and Sociedad closed the first half at 2-1 after Oyarzabal's penalty. The score became 2-2 in the 83rd minute, after Alvarez's shot into the top corner.
It came down to penalties, where the stars Sorloth and Alvarez missed for Atletico, while only Oskarsson missed for Sociedad. Therefore, Sociedad wins the Spanish Cup for the 4th time in history and will play directly in the main group stage of the Europa League next year.
In the direct matches this season, Atletico Madrid won at home, 3-2, and achieved a draw away at Real Sociedad, 1-1.
The finalists of the Spanish Cup also get to participate in the Spanish Super Cup, which in recent seasons has been held in Saudi Arabia.
