The joint permanent offices of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate rejected, on Saturday, the proposal to suspend President Klaus Iohannis.
The members of the Joint Standing Bureau considered that the proposal to suspend the president did not comply with the submission procedure as provided for in the Common Regulation of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, namely, it was not simultaneously submitted to the Permanent Offices of the Parliament Chambers.
On January 16, the Young People's Party announced that 161 POT, AUR, and SOS parliamentarians signed for the suspension of President Klaus Iohannis, and the signatures were submitted to the President of the Chamber of Deputies.
Anamaria Gavrilă, the POT president, stated that her party initiated this move because Romania "must maintain its democratic path."
"We have recorded the initiative to suspend Klaus Iohannis. It is a POT initiative joined by AUR party members and SOS party members. There are a total of 161 signatures. A minimum of 155 were required to trigger this suspension procedure. We wanted to show that we are not idle, we are moving, trying, together with AUR, to also obtain a debate in an emergency session on this initiative," transmitted Anamaria Gavrilă.
According to the Constitution, in case of committing serious acts that violate the provisions of the Constitution, the President of Romania can be suspended from office by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, in a joint session, with the vote of the majority of deputies and senators, namely 234, after consulting the Constitutional Court. The president can provide explanations to Parliament regarding the alleged acts.
The proposal for suspension from office can be initiated by at least one-third of the number of deputies and senators, namely 155 parliamentarians.
