The Mayor of Buzău, Constantin Toma, announced his resignation on Tuesday from the positions of President of the Buzău City PSD Municipal Organization and First Vice President of the Buzău County PSD Organization.
The mayor claims that the decision comes amid tensions within the local organization, after some PSD councilors voted against some projects promoted by him in the last two sessions of the Local Council.
“Considering the hostile attitude of the local PSD leadership and a significant part of the local PSD councilors, I appreciate that I no longer fit in the leadership positions from which I resigned,” Constantin Toma conveyed in a message addressed to the people of Buzău.
Accuses reprisals after criticizing the PSD leadership
The mayor states that the decision of the local leadership and some PSD elected officials to oppose his projects is related to the critical positions he has taken in recent months against the party's central leadership.
“I am convinced that the attitude of the leadership in Buzău and the local PSD councilors is related to my criticism of the policy pursued by the central leadership of the PSD, which has put the country in a very difficult situation,” Toma stated.
He recalled that on June 5, it will be 10 years since he was first elected mayor and argued that the local administration has achieved recognized results both nationally and internationally during this period.

“I regret the step I took”
Constantin Toma emphasized that the Buzău City PSD Organization has become one of the most successful in the country and that during his tenure as a local leader, the party obtained a majority in the Local Council for the first time.
“I regret the step I took, considering that the Buzău City PSD Organization is one of the most successful nationally,” the mayor stated.
He thanked the residents of the city for their support and assured them that he will continue his work at the helm of the Buzău City Hall.
An increasingly vocal critic of the PSD
In recent months, Constantin Toma has stood out with critical positions against the decisions of the national PSD leadership.
In April, he was among those who supported maintaining political support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
At the same time, another important figure in PSD Buzău, Deputy Petre Emanoil Neagu, former President of the Buzău County Council, attended the National Political Bureau meeting of the PNL and later announced that he was joining the liberals. “Today I submitted the paper to the Chamber of Deputies, and from tomorrow I will be in the PNL bench,” Neagu declared to News.ro at that time.
