President Nicușor Dan has officially invited the parliamentary parties to the Cotroceni Palace for new formal consultations regarding the designation of the candidate for the position of prime minister.
The presidential administration has announced the schedule of consultations to take place on Thursday:
- 9:00 - Social Democratic Party (PSD);
- 9:30 - Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR);
- 10:00 - National Liberal Party (PNL);
- 10:30 - Save Romania Union (USR);
- 11:00 - Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR);
- 11:30 - Parliamentary Group of National Minorities;
- 12:00 - S.O.S. Romania Party (SOS);
- 12:30 - Youth People's Party (POT);
- 13:00 - Parliamentary Group United for Romania;
- 13:30 - Parliamentary Group PACE – First Romania;
- 14:00 - Unaffiliated MPs.
After four months of political crisis and two failed attempts, Nicușor Dan is forced to announce the name of the new designated prime minister as soon as possible. It is possible that the designation will be made even before his departure to the USA (he will depart for New York on Saturday morning to attend the UN Assembly).
It remains to be seen whether the new nominee will manage to gather the required 233 votes or if it will pave the way for early elections.
Our sources tell us that in the last two days, PSD and AUR have already had 3 meetings for the formation of the Government. The meetings were even at the highest level - between Sorin Grindeanu and George Simion.
A PSD-AUR majority is already operating punctually in Parliament
Since the beginning of the new parliamentary session, a PSD-AUR alliance has been operating de facto in Parliament.
It is worth mentioning that PSD, AUR, SOS Romania, United for Romania, representatives of minorities, and UDMR parliamentarians voted together for the redistribution of positions in the Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies.
PNL and USR lost two leadership positions, which were taken by AUR and SOS Romania.
Subsequently, PSD and AUR placed their people in charge of the public TV and radio.
The vote does not prove the existence of a governing coalition, but it shows that PSD can build punctual majorities together with AUR, SOS, and other MPs. This gives them greater negotiating power in relation to the president and right-wing parties.
