Nicusor Dan stated that he informed the leaders of the pro-European parties who intend to form the future government of his intention to run for the presidential elections. He said that Bucharest will benefit more with him as president than with him leading the city hall.
The Mayor of the Capital declared that he has informed the parties intending to form the future government that he will run for the presidency. „I have informed them about my intention, and of course, there will be further analysis that will take time,” he said on Europa FM.
When asked if he has received signals of support from any party, he avoided giving a definitive answer. "As you know, this discussion is happening in parallel with the negotiations for the formation of the Government. The main priority for the parties trying to form a coalition now is the formation of the Government, and they have also set a timeline. It is a discussion that will follow, of course," the mayor said.
The first hint regarding support from this direction came on Tuesday from the interim president of PNL, Ilie Bolojan, who does not exclude the possibility of PNL supporting Nicusor Dan, but further analysis needs to be done.
On the other hand, major parties could be interested in other scenarios as well, not necessarily supporting an independent candidate, Nicusor Dan admits. What matters is that voters will have time in the upcoming electoral campaign to see the electoral programs and not just choose the lesser evil.
"There is a fundamental change in Romania, in people's expectations that was manifested in the vote we had three weeks ago and four weeks ago. If in previous elections people's message was 'We will choose the least bad option', in my opinion, in these elections the message was 'It doesn't work like this anymore'. So, each of us needs to readjust to this situation, and I believe this is how I can help solve the problems society faces," he said.
When asked about the arguments against running for presidential elections, Nicusor Dan replied: "The arguments against are largely emotional. Obviously, you get attached to the things you start and want to see them through to the end."
He stated that, rationally, Bucharest will benefit if the administrative reform that people are waiting for and that is so necessary in Romania is carried out, regardless of who will be the mayor.
"So, in short, I believe that Bucharest will fare better with me as president than with me as mayor," Dan concluded.
