Moldova has signed a security agreement with the United Kingdom

Moldova and the United Kingdom have concluded a security partnership to strengthen the country’s safety against external threats, Reuters reports.

On Wednesday, Moldova and the United Kingdom signed a new security and defense partnership aimed at supporting the country’s resilience against external threats, in the context of the war in Ukraine, which has surpassed 1,000 days.

The agreement, signed in Chișinău, includes measures to enhance Moldova's protection against cyber attacks through a program funded with two million pounds, and a five million pound grant for health services for refugees.

British Foreign Minister David Lammy emphasized the impact of the war on Moldova, which has received a significant number of Ukrainian refugees, including 50,000 children. "With Ukraine at the border, Moldovans are constantly facing Russian oppression and aggression," he stated.

At the same time, an agreement was signed for the repatriation of Moldovan citizens illegally residing in the United Kingdom.

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean presented, on the same day, an update to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, which includes integration into the European Union as a strategic objective. The initiative comes after Moldovans recently narrowly supported a referendum to include the goal of EU accession in the constitution.
