Romania has offered to bear some of the costs of American military operations as part of discussions about the presence of US troops in Europe. President Nicușor Dan says that Bucharest has responded to the technical questions received from Washington and is awaiting a decision.
„We have done our homework well, we have sent our response to all the technical questions they asked us. We have even offered to somehow share the cost of these operations and we are awaiting the response from the American administration,” stated the head of state, to Antena 3. He did not specify the amount Romania would pay or for which operations.
American decision expected in November
Dan explained that the Trump administration is analyzing the placement of its troops in Europe and is in discussions with the countries on the continent. According to the president, the analysis is due in November, and the dialogue between Bucharest and Washington continues.
When asked if he discussed the reinforcement of troops in Romania with Donald Trump at the reception offered by him, Nicușor Dan replied that the meeting was too short to address the subject. "It was a very brief interaction where we exchanged pleasantries. The message, in broad terms, was that the United States can rely on Romania," said the president.
The statements come in the context of the Pentagon examining several options for reducing or redistributing American forces in Europe. According to NBC News, one of the options would involve withdrawing approximately 25,000 troops. Possible moves of troops to NATO countries in Eastern Europe are also being considered. So far, no decision regarding Romania has been announced.
