Four Romanian workers died following the fire that broke out on Thursday at the Midia Naval Shipyard.
The ship that caught fire had entered repairs a few days ago. The fire reportedly started in the engine room, quickly spreading to other compartments.
Work has been halted at the Midia Naval Shipyard. The ship that caught fire was sailing under the Belize flag and had a mixed crew of 19 Syrians, one Egyptian, and one Lebanese on board. The sailors on the vessel managed to escape, but the Romanians working on repairs did not.
Since the ship is considered foreign territory, the investigation will be carried out by the Border Police, under the coordination of the Prosecutor's Office. The Labor Inspection is conducting its own investigation.
"It is impossible to enter the engine room; it is 50 degrees there, the temperature is still high, there are fumes. We will thoroughly check the nature of the work done, whether special permits and authorizations were required," said the head of the Constanta Labor Inspectorate last night, as quoted by Antena3.
The Police, Prosecutor's Office, and Environmental Guard have also launched investigations at the Naval Shipyard to determine exactly what happened.
