The European Union has decided to counterattack with its own measures the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. The European Commission has published a 99-page list of American products that could be taxed in response to the global taxes of 25% on steel and aluminum.
From poultry to motorcycles and even women’s lingerie, the list of products targets various sectors of the American economy, as reported by Politico.
The European Commission counterattacks with taxes on American products
The European Commission has taken retaliatory measures against the US, targeting products worth 26 billion euros.
The list of products that could be subject to retaliatory tariffs is very diverse, ranging from food products to motorcycles and jeans.
Here are just a few of the American products that could end up on the European tariff list:
- Poultry
- Chewing gum
- Alcoholic beverages (including bourbon)
- Harley-Davidson motorcycles
- Jeans
- Communion wafers
- E-cigarettes and nicotine patches
- Women's lingerie
- Tents
- Workshop tools
- Household appliances
- Snowplows
- Factory equipment
The European Commission hopes that these measures will put pressure on American states that support Trump's trade policy and will compel the administration to abandon the tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum.
If a negotiated solution is not reached, the measures will come into effect in two stages, the first on April 1 and the second in mid-April, depending on the negotiation results.
Public feedback is essential
In the absence of a negotiated solution, starting from April 1, the Commission will impose measures in response to the 8 billion euros in tariffs imposed by the USA - including iconic American products such as Harley-Davidson motorcycles, bourbon, and jeans. And from mid-April, it will establish additional countermeasures for new American tariffs worth 18 billion euros, subject to the approval of EU member countries.
The EU Executive has launched a survey to gather opinions from those affected by American tariffs, setting a deadline of March 26 for responses to be submitted.
