Premiere for Hidroelectrica: Photovoltaic panels on a lake

Hidroelectrica will have photovoltaic panels on a lake in Olt County, Romania.

Hidroelectrica has signed the contract for the implementation of the „Nufărul Pilot Project,” which aims to build the first floating photovoltaic power plant in the company’s portfolio.

According to a statement released by the company on Thursday, the project represents a premiere in Romania and aims to develop additional renewable energy production capacity.

The contract was awarded, following an open tender, to Waldevar Energy firm, for the amount of 39.25 million lei, excluding VAT, significantly below the initially estimated value.

The project will be implemented with the support of subcontractors Marine Research, DHI-SW Project SRL, and Makor Energy Solutions.

Where the power plant will be located

The floating photovoltaic power plant will be built in Olt County, on the reservoir of the Ipotești Hydroelectric Power Plant, and will have a total installed capacity in panels of 10 MW, with an estimated production of 13.4 GWh/year.

The connection to the National Energy System will be made through the existing station of the hydroelectric power plant.

The total implementation duration is 14 months, of which 10 months are allocated to the execution of works.

Project objectives

"The purpose of the investment is to create a new capacity for electricity production through a photovoltaic power plant located on the water surface," the company emphasizes. Hidroelectrica aims to:

  • diversify its production portfolio;
  • exploit the potential of reservoirs;
  • accumulate know-how for future similar projects;
  • create synergies between hydro and solar production.

Waldevar Energy, the contract winner, is an important player in the European renewable energy market, with over 1.5 GW of completed or under development projects and a team of 1,000 experts.

Through this project, Hidroelectrica reaffirms its commitment to energy transition. "The company thus reaffirms its commitment to promoting renewable energies and modernizing production infrastructure, in line with the national strategy for transitioning to a green and sustainable economy," as stated in the official press release.
