Burduja announces that, for the first time, Romania has become the largest gas producer in the European Union

The Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, announces that for the first time, Romania has already become the largest producer of gas in the European Union.

„For the first time, Romania has already become the largest producer of gas in the European Union. The data is for the second quarter of 2024 and confirms the leading position that we have assumed at the European level, with a production of 2.3 billion cubic meters of gas. We have ‘dethroned’ the Netherlands, which recorded a production of 2.2 billion cubic meters. Compared to last year, Romanian gas production has increased by 1%,” announces the Minister of Energy.

Burduja specifies that the great merit belongs to Romgaz, the company in the portfolio of the Ministry of Energy, which had a gas production 5% higher at six months, compared to the same period last year.

"They put into production 7 new wells this year, including 100 Caragele, a well put into production in just 75 days, an absolute record. And the investment plans continue. In 2024, Romgaz will allocate 600-800 million lei for increasing Romanian gas production (at 6 months, 1.25 billion lei, including the investment in Neptun Deep)," emphasizes Sebastian Burduja.

The Minister also points out that during the same period, Romanians benefited from the fourth cheapest gas price, according to Eurostat data, and from 2027, through the deep-sea gas in the Black Sea, we will effectively double our Romanian gas production.

"We will have an even better gas price, we will attract even more investments in the economy, and we will support the entire region to reduce its dependence on Russian gas," says Burduja.

"I understand that our results and plans upset many people. Recently, a non-governmental organization tried to block the Neptun Deep project by claiming that there are ancient relics on the seabed 160 km off the Black Sea shore, in the gas exploitation area... We are ready to complete all these strategic investments, no matter how many interests we disturb.

The investments amount to billions of euros and have been prepared and approved by the book. The energy independence of Romanians is non-negotiable. So, dear friends, the future of Romanian energy sounds better and better. And this means lower bills, development, better-paid jobs, larger investments. Forward, together," Burduja concludes.
