Nicușor Dan on photo scandal: “If I’m called to DIICOT, I’ll go.” Still unclear: who paid?

President Nicușor Dan stated that he is willing to appear at DIICOT if summoned in the case regarding the controversial photos that surfaced during the 2025 presidential election campaign.

The statements were made on Tuesday in Timișoara, where the head of state was asked if he had been questioned in this case. Nicușor Dan emphasized that he is actually the one who alerted the investigators.

"I have been to DIICOT, I am the one who filed the complaint that led to this criminal investigation," the president said.

When asked if he expects to be called in for questioning, he replied that he will cooperate without reservations: "If I am ever called, I will go."

Suspicions of Manipulation in the Campaign

The case concerns the images that surfaced a few days before the first round of the 2025 presidential elections, published by Elena Lasconi. She claimed that the photos depicted a meeting between Nicușor Dan, Victor Ponta, and Florian Coldea at a location near the capital.

However, prosecutors are examining the hypothesis that the images were actually staged. According to the investigation data, several individuals were involved in the setup: they used disguises, took the photos, and rented a building in Tunari, Ilfov County.

Several hearings have already taken place in this case, and the investigation is ongoing.

"Who Paid These People?"

Nicușor Dan says that the real stake of the investigation is not just the authenticity of the photos but the funding of those involved.

"There are two clear things: I filed a complaint with DIICOT the day after the elements appeared in the public space (...) Two of these people were also in the photos we are talking about. Beyond that, it's the prosecutors' job (...) the essential question is who paid these people," the president stated.

The head of state added that some of the individuals involved had previously worked in his campaign teams, without providing further details.

Suspicion of a Coordinated Operation

Investigators are considering the existence of an organized operation aimed at influencing public perception during the electoral campaign.

Sources from the case indicate that there are several suspects, and the investigation focuses on how the entire situation was staged and on any financial ties behind it.

The investigation is ongoing, and prosecutors will determine both individual responsibilities and potential beneficiaries of the operation.
